Actually, I grew up in this house at 449 Park Avenue, Glencoe, IL. When my parents bought it in 1955, they paid $19,700.00 for it. At that time, it had a dirt floor in the basement and a quaint front porch, that my father, Ralph "Barney" Barenbrugge, ripped down in the early 1960's and replaced with an open concrete porch and the flat yard was excavated into a sweeping hill up to the new concrete porch area. Since the property sold and left our family in the late 1980's, the current owner totally renovated the house back to its original form and the property actually was declared an Historical Landmark.

841 Vernon Avenue was built by my grandfather, Albert C. Hillinger as a temporary residence in 1919 for his family which included his wife, Minnie H. Hillinger and his daughters, Alice and Katherine (my mother). His plans were to build a much larger home in the Skokie Heights area of Glencoe for his family but, when the Depression hit, they decided to stay put! The home remained in our family for the next 81 years until it was sold in 2000.

There are so many fond memories for me having visited my grandparents almost everyday of my childhood since I grew up three blocks away at 449 Park Avenue.

During the Depression, 841 Vernon Avenue became a "marked house" and was visited daily by the "hobos-tramps-etc" that rode the freight trains from the poor southern states to the northern coal mines that these impoverished souls would mine so that they could bring their earnings back to their families in the south. There was a freight yard about a block to the east of 841 Vernon and low and behold these men would stop at 841 Vernon for a hot meal, a place to clean up and get fresh clothing and some sleep before heading on their way. My grandparents assisted the homeless and these travelers throughout the Depression.

My goal is to carry on with my grandparents tradition by opening shelters throughout the Chicagoland area!
