Pitcher Samardzija spends $710K for Southport condo

Chicago Cubs minor league pitcher and former Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija bought a two-bedroom, two bath condo at 3351 N. Southport Ave. in Lake View for $710,000 from Erik Gershfeld on March 27.

Gershfeld paid $599,000 for Unit #3 in April 2006. It is one of three in the building.

Currently pitching with the Cubs' Class AA affiliate the Tennessee Smokies, Samardzija, 23, was selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the 2006 MLB Draft. His selection and decision to pursue a career in professional baseball came after he spurned an almost assured spot in the NFL after leaving Notre Dame as the school's all-time leading receiver.

Samardzija set single-season records for the Fighting Irish in receptions and yards during his career there, and he was named a first-team All-American in 2005 and a second-team All-American after his final season in 2006.

Samardzija also thrived on the diamond for the Irish, finishing 8-2 with a 4.33 ERA in 15 career starts.

He decided to forgo a career in pro football on Jan. 19, 2007, when he signed a five-year contract worth a reported $8 million with the Cubs. He has since risen up the ranks of the Cubs' minor league system, and has posted a 2-1 record with a team-best 2.35 ERA with the Knoxville-based Smokies (as of April 22).

Originally from Valparaiso, Ind., he played football and baseball at Valparaiso High School.

Gershfeld is a manager for Idea Media Services in Chicago.
