Mrs. Meltzer was an organizer in Hyde Park and a board member at SGA Youth and Family Services, where she also served as board president for two terms. She worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, the National Institute of Public Affairs, was an officer with the Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference and the Kenwood Neighborhood Redevelopment Corp.

She earned her bachelor's degree from Smith College. She also attended the University of Chicago Lab Schools and the University of Chicago School for Social Service Administration.

She passed away in Oct. 2008 in Chicago.
